The innermost layer of clothing for men were a loose shirt made of linen that was most often held up by a belt. This was called a breech or braise. The layer on top, the shirt, was also made of linen and considered an undergarment. The legs were usually covered by a hose made out of wool. These were essentially brightly colored and had leather soles. The most important part of the dress was the doublet, a buttoned jacket that ended at hip-length.

The innermost layer of a woman`s clothing was linen or woolen smock. While some smocks were loose fitting, others fit the figure quite well. Hoses and stockings were also commonly worn up to the knee. Over the stocking or chemise, women wore fitted gown called a kirtle that was ankle or floor-length. On formal occasions, these gowns had trains.
